I agree with Razael.

You just need that bass line, man. It really adds definition to the chord progression, and the extra voice blends the mix better.

Still, great work with what you've got here. 5/5 | 9/10. Looking forward to your next mix, Shawn! :D

P.S.: I caught this submission in the RSS feed. I'm glad that it's working. Thanks, NG! :D

Shiverwar responds:

The bass line is in there. I guess I just need to change its instrument. I didn't like the sound of the synth bass, so I put in a harp instead.

Thanks for your wonderful review, as always! :D

By ear? Really?

Awesome job, Shawn. It's remarkably close -- I'm surprised you didn't use a MIDI, since someone put one out a few months ago.

Anyway, great mix. Keep it up, man.

~Joshy676

P.S.: I'm subscribing to your AP RSS feed so that I stop missing your latest submissions. :D

Shiverwar responds:

It would have been useless to try the MIDI, since this computer doesn't have Power Tabs, since that's the way I like to do things.

Yeah, this was entirely by ear, and it was a doozy to get done. Thanks for your review!

Freaking awesome!

Ever since I picked up YouTube user brentalfloss's CD ("What If This CD... Had Lyrics?"), I've been in love with the Tetris jingle (particularly the Gameboy Type A version, in which Pattern A is played once instead of twice -- or three times, in your case), so forgive me if I can't help but sing his lyrics over your piece. :D

Very nice work here, Shawn. :D

Shiverwar responds:

I'm glad to get such a wonderful review from an artist I look up to, and you're but 2 years older than I am. XD But 2 years can mean a world of difference. :D This was actually my first ever Tetris mix, so I can't help but notice a few hoo-hah mistakes here and there, but what'cha gonna do?

Me likey.

Very cool, my friend. Calming and refreshing, it's very close in feeling to the source tune. I really like your harp's tone. :D

~Joshy676

Shiverwar responds:

Would you believe me if I said I imported the MID file onto Power Tabs and worked from there, making it slower? :D Thanks! This is, in my opinion, the most calming song in the series, followed by the Serenade of Water (Twilight Princess version).

Cool story bro.

Thanks for the shameless plug! Now onto the review:

It's good enough to where I will blatantly steal this idea from you. :D

I kid, I kid. But seriously, expect a "Retro Canyon Joshy Mix" or something like that soon.

DarkPortalStudios responds:

Thank you for your review!

One of your instruments isn't a square wave.

Sounds like you accidentally left the FF7 French Horn in there instead of using the NES soundfont all the way around, so you can't call it completely NES style. :P

Sound cool, though. Good job, dude.

DarkPortalStudios responds:

That NES Sound Font you gave me has working Trumpets, and they sound good. I only used things from the NES sound bank, so it's still an NES tune.

Thanks for your review!

Woot.

Of all the stuff you've got so far, this is by far your best mix yet. Keep up the good work, good sir. :)

~Joshy676

DarkPortalStudios responds:

Thanks brah, that's a pretty cool story you got there. :A

I love it!

Just what my evening needed. My twin's inquiring about a transcription/tab of the guitar parts while I listen in case you want to work on it again and get recorded parts.

I liked the original quite a bit, but this is, honestly, much MUCH better. I'm honestly hooked and the piece isn't even through its first playthrough yet! :D

Keep it up, dude. Your work improves with every submission.

~Joshy676

Shiverwar responds:

Hehe, thanks, Josh! Always glad to know you like to keep up on my work. :D

We did good, man!

This is why the NGAP needs a collab option in its next update: we do a lot of work together and it would be nice if we could mark our collaborated work as such.

Anyway, time to toot my own horn! This marks the first time I've A) used FL Studio to do all the writing for a drum track and B) used multiple patterns to arrange a musical piece in FL Studio. That said, I can't wait to record the drum track for the whole thing -- I mean, this is, for all intents and purposes, just a tech demo -- because this new drum soundfont is one tom short (and SGM, much as I love it, sound too much like an electric kit for my tastes).

You did a great job on the other instruments and mixing. I also enjoyed the final result on the vocals.

~Joshy676

P.S.:Are we going to put out a tech demo of part 2 before recording the whole shebang?

pixelseph responds:

Yes, and as for your PS, probably. xD

:D

It's purdy! :3

I'm not sure of this piece has more emphasis on "short" or "sweet," because it resulted in an abundance of both. Remind me to put this on my [CORPORATE PORTABLE MUSIC PLAYING DEVICE] under the playlist "Songs to Sit Down and Shut Up to." It's really all I feel like doing while listening to this.

Or maybe hang out with a special someone. But that's another story for another day.

Good job again, Shawn. Keep up the good tuneage.
~Joshy676

P.S.: It seems that you're churning out a lot of your work as though using FL Studio as a musical sausage grinder. Will you ever run out of material?

Shiverwar responds:

I have material. I just need to come up with a good recipe for a new delectable song. :P Thanks, Josh. :D
